Worth

“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” ~ Matthew 7:6

By definition, worth is the level at which someone or something deserves to be valued or rated. What are you worth? You determine your own price, and your own value, through your self worth. Your self worth can always be seen in what you accept in your life. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world and namely your self worth. Life will only give you what you have the audacity to demand. And what you think you can demand is determined by your self worth.

It’s important to look at what you are allowing in your life. A lot of times we are tempted to settle for circumstances that are not worthy of us. The thing is, when we lower our standards, we lower ourselves. “The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.” ~ Maureen Dowd. When we accept what is beneath us, we lessen our own value. We cheapen ourselves.

This is so often true in dating and in relationships. If you allow others to mistreat you, belittle you, dismiss you, use you…if you continue to accept this treatment, you become as invaluable as they deem you to be. You do yourself no favors settling for the instant gratification of attention, when ultimately you are accepting disrespect. Acceptance is permission. “You are what you settle for.” ~Janis Joplin. No matter how appealing, unacceptable is unacceptable. Do not trade what you want ultimately, and what you ultimately deserve, for some cheaper available substitute. You will only let yourself down. Do not take the bait. You demonstrate your worth by maintaining standards. Hold out for greater. Accept nothing less.

“The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want right now.” ~Zig Ziglar

Don’t sell yourself short in life. It’s a trap. Maybe you minimize your self worth by settling for relationships, jobs, or circumstances that are beneath you. Maybe you choose not to strive for more or better. Perhaps you think you’re playing it safe by minimizing yourself and settling for lesser things. But you know better. And you will be progressively disappointed in yourself for betraying and denying your self worth. There is no glory in devaluing yourself and playing small. And the funny thing is, you can still fail at something you settled for. So you may as well go for something you really want. Something worthy of your time, energy, and efforts. Don’t play small. Assign yourself a high self-value and demand more from life.

“You don’t soar to the level of your hopes and dreams. You stay stuck at the level of your self-worth.” ~ Jamie Kern Lima

So how do you build your self worth? Improve on what is within your command, so that you can increase what you can demand. Determine who you want to be, what you want to have, and what it will take to get there. Set goals. Conquer tasks. Commit to growth. Invest in yourself. Be consistent. And above all, reject what is beneath you. Say ‘no’, and ‘absolutely not’ to things that are contrary to your self-esteem, self-worth, and self-value. Hold your standards high. Know you are worth it. Demand greater and have it.
